Conservation - Table 1

A comparison of past and present lists of species identified as either endangered, threatened, or of special concern in New York State. Species shared with the federal list prepared by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are indicated by an asterisk.

* indicates a species concurrently listed as endangered by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
o indicates a species concurrently listed as threatened by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
† indicates a species extirpated from New York State.

There is no federal equivalent to the "Special Concern" category. The Piping Plover is federally listed as endangered for the Great Lakes region and threatened for the Atlantic coastal region. English names are those recommended by the American Ornithologists' Union (1998).
