New York’s Natural Communities:

In New York State, there are over 200 ecosystems (or community types) defined by the New York Natural Heritage Program, and additional communities and associations are being found. Some examples are northern hardwood forest, bog lake, pitch pine - scrub oak barrens, freshwater tidal swamp and marine deepwater community. Since there are enormous numbers and varieties of habitats and intergrades between them, their classification is a complex matter. New York's natural communities have been grouped into the following ecosystems.

  • Marine and Estuarine
  • Rivers and Streams
  • Lakes and Ponds
  • Grasslands and shrublands
  • Forests
  • Cultural Landscapes
    • Agricultural
    • Urban
  • Subterranean
